Due to overactivity of apocrine sweat glands in armpits. Sudden onset of excessive sweating at any time, not related to exercise or heat. Unable to be controlled by antiperspirants.
Treatment: Surgery, under general anaesthetic, 1½ hours, day only procedure.
Technique: “Scandanavian” with removal of multiple and enlarged sweat glands by avulsion via a small stab incision either end of axilla, introducing a sharp uterine currette the glands are removed from underneath the skin.
Post Operative: Minimal discomfort, 2 days will well mobilised. Dressings removed/ shower 4th day.
Results excellent – dry armpit, also little hair growth. 1% small recurrence – needs further surgery LA.
Costs: Covered by Medicare and Fund, with small gap fee.
